How to Fulfill the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement
Find out how to meet the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement.
What is the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)?
- The University of California requires all undergraduate students to demonstrate a minimum proficiency in English composition by meeting the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR). This is one of the undergraduate degree requirements.
- You must fulfill the ELWR before you are able to enroll in university-level writing courses.
- You must fulfill the ELWR within a limited time frame.
Prior to enrollment at UC San Diego, you may meet the requirement with a qualifying SAT, ACT, AP, or IB test score, or a transferable college composition course. Visit the ELWR page for details.
What if I don't have a qualifying score or course?
- You must complete a writing placement exam in summer.
- If the exam places you in College Writing courses, you have fulfilled the ELWR.
- If the exam places you in AWP 3 or AWP 4A-4B, you must take the course during your first quarter at UC San Diego. You will fulfill the ELWR when you pass AWP 3 or AWP 4B with a C or better.
