Originally known as Benedict, the community found itself in 1911 having to fight off a City of Anaheim proposal to build a sewage farm in their midst. This compelled residents, with the help of Seal Beach founder Philip A. Stanton, to incorporate their community that year. Although there is apparently some debate on the origin of the city's new name, Stanton, it is generally believed that the city chose it to honor the man who helped it to incorporate.
Stanton voters agreed to disincorporate as a city in 1924, in order to allow the state to come in and build roads in the area. The city reincorporated in 1956.
